the loss of a beloved aunt

there is an olde african proverb
"when an elder dies a library burns down"

eye
lost one of my favorite human beings & klass-act blood-kin
aunts today

eye think about
how often.... all we have left
are the dearly departed ....final departing words
as if we don't realize
how close mary was to leaving the earthly plane
we shared a kiss & a hug & eye love you
and then one walks away carrying their last-lingering -look
buried deep inside the lump in our voice & throat

all those thousands of words spoken to each other
countless x-mas dinners & thanxsgiving feasts
a hundred meals shared at her table
talks on religion & politics & family stories resurrected

as a child eye always remember a present stuffed under her x-mas tree
with my name tattooed on it
even though our parents stopped drawing names

anytime day or night her front door was open for me
a place to sleep
a place to sit
or grab something out of the frig to drink or eat

she prayed the rosary so many times
that she became the prayers on the rosary
her hail marys heralded a mary full of grace

her sister was my mother
they were like the same polarities of a magnet
that repealed each other
they had so much in common that it was impossible to share
each others nearly mc dermott identical love

it has been said "one should never argue with a woman"
but one should never ever ever disagree with an aunt
especially when they were part of your nurturing & upbringing
snatching one out of harm's way
helping patch you up from childhood bumps&bruises

we never met without anointing each other with a kiss
even if it was to travel half way across a room
kissing her was like kissing the my mother's twin

her 9 grownup adult children
have always been like my brothers & sisters
no matter how many days/months/years have past
we can always connect like we were together yesterday
any past difference was always forgotten & forgiven

she had a spiritual connection with the 10 commandments
she once mentioned to me of putting them up in her front lawn
and i asked her which they were going to face
and she said "there was only one way they could face
towards the people driving by .....that needed to read them"
i said "there were really three possibilities.....
they could face away from the house
they could directly at the house
or they could face both ways"
she had planted them in the front yard facing the public

aunt mary jean was a antique wheeler-dealer with a gift of gab
she was a full grown female irish leprechaun
who liked & loved to feed the multitudes
who attended all family gatherings & births/weddings/funerals
the photographer in residence
who stole your heart & gave you compassion & kindness in return
who made you feel her home was your home

the queen of wellington east fourth street has left us
with beautiful & precious memories galore
a proud lady who never backed down from any controversy
even if it meant .....she had to stand alone
she was the true mayor extraordinaire of the city eye call waterloo
always standing up for the people who felt unrepresented
on both sides of the tracks

we love you sweetie.............with those betty grable legs...........ava gardner face
& occasional scarlet o'hara disposition

may you get a free pass through purgatory.........
from the thousands of indulgences& rosaries recited daily

here's a snapshot of my liddle grand daughter all dressed up
to charm & scare her grandparents
....must be payback for dressing up our kids when they were youngsters
but that is how memories are made
& great traditions are started

.........one thing about halloween
is it is near impossible to get arrested
and men can drive around looking like women
women like men
in any kind of monster or villain & be left alone
...why we all need halloween to be real
who are submerged/closet self really is
maybe a cartoon character
maybe count dracula
maybe alice cooper
maybe a stripper
maybe a transvestite
maybe a transformer
maybe darth vader
maybe a pregnant nun
maybe hillary clinton
maybe dick cheney....heavens forbid
maybe tigger

& if he was ztill alive my grandpa andorf's birthday
born in 1889 eye believe
always a good night for his birthday party
he'd hire a local man to be the boogie man
& peek through the livingroom window
& scare frighten our hearts to sip-a-beat or two

yokesofthedaze......

What Did the Cannibal Say…

Q. What did the cannibal say when he came upon a sleeping missionary.

A. "Ah! breakfast in bed."

of course that reminds me of the olde klassic line by herman melville

i rather sleep with a sober cannibal
than a drunken christian

eye would zay there is a wee bit of saltwater truth in that line
you know what the cannibal will do to thee
but a drunken christian would be an opened ended proposition
then he might not remember a thing the next day

eye wonder often what the native people used to think
when the missionaries used to explain the eucharist or holy communion to 'em
when they were tasting the body&blood of christ
this is shown in great metaphorical symbolism in the movie
the other conquest(aztecs vs. spanishmissionaries)
out right now in video stores............been a long wait
to have it finally have english subtitles
better than chac :the rain god
the mission(with robert de niro)
apocalypto
aguirre, the wrath of god
emerald forest

if you haven't seen any of these modern cinematic treasures
like comparing coconuts & avocados & grapefruit
they are all mindbogglin'&mindexpandin' in their own right

interesting footnote
in the directors cut to the other conquest

it was mentioned that in the 15th century
that european thought was that indians didn't have souls
of course the indians would have answered that question
if posed to them..........the opposite way
since all earthly life form has souls
...for example few people think the earth is alive or has a spirit
until an earthquake............can shake up& move the earth rather quickly
or the wind&sky.........until you see & feel a hurricane or tornado comin' at ya
what is often heresy for one culture is total acceptance by another

of course my definition of religion
is not what you do for an hour on sunday
but what your deeds & accomplishments
are for those other 6 days a week........humanitarian efforts

my adopted meskwakie grandmother used to zay(paraphazing of course)
--the sabbath is not just on sunday but everyday of the week--
prayer should be attended to each & every day
not just performed in front of a congregation & clergy

there is an ancient question
on who does more for the world
....someone speaking in front of thousands
or someone praying alone on top of a hill

probably the only way to be in balance & at peace in today's world of fear & konfusion
peoples' hunger that hungers for more hunger ......that is never satisfied
tis not getting a fix or addicted to everything that is ungodly&unholy
............god is in the invisible( )details
full of serendipity & surprises & awakenings &..............................

may eye always be a bit theo-illogikal.............

my supersweet gorgeouslybeautiful princess

oh she takes me breath away & leaves me breathless
my left eye sheds a tear & my right eye twinkles
with an abundance of released worshippinglaughter

quote of the daze about her.....
"the only thing worth stealing
is a kiss from a child"
-joe houldsworth

'n' eye'm a thief for her kisses

she is the gift that keeps on giving
& she hasn't said a single english or lakota or indonesian word yet
but speaks a language we all try to duplicate
in baby talk
bringing out the rural vernacular version of onomatopoeia
with bird & wild animal & jungle & yodelin' koyote sounds

thanxs destri for downloading her snapshots of precious innocent love
for me to share with friends & family
give me braggin' rights
she sure has a lot of andorf&mcdermott in her
see some resemblances of peterman too

mandatory things to do post hi skool or kollege or pre-death

"top things to do in iowa after graduating from high school"
eye dare anyone to add anything to it
come on now use your blurry imagination
scratch your reseeding hairline
travel deep in your aging heart anyway

here is the list..........
top things to do in ioway after graduation from high school

* have your picture taken beside the brandon frying pan

* journey to gunder ioway and devour a one pound gunder burger
(spell iowa like the indian tribe ioway)

* canoe the wapsipinicon river from central city to waubeek (gaze-at-the-columbines)

* dance at a meskwakie powwow and wolf down an indian taco

* go fishing without a hook ‘n’ see what you catch

* walk barefoot in the snow

* watch a midnight movie at a drive-in & steam up the windows

* smell the fragrance of a canadian thistle & wild rose & the catalpa tree

* date an amish girl & kiss an ex-nun (could be habit forming)

* take some out-of-state friends snipe hunting

*dance the twist to the beatles song “twist & shout”

* explore effigy mounds(leave a heartfelt gift to the indigenous spirits)

* attend an ioway county fair & eat cotton candy & a footlonghotdog

* watch the movie “rocky horror picture show” in costume (don't be a drag)

* let an ancient indian arrow point discover you

* hear&feel the muzik of buddy holly & the big bopper at the surf ballroom in clear lake

* watch the movies full metal jacket & born on the fourth of july before boot camp

*do the limbo & play co-ed twister

* write a book of poems about your life & experiences & loves in ioway

* play strip poker in reverse......never go skinny dipping with a bowlegged woman

* someday leave flowers on a cemetery grave in potter’s field or a county home or last resting place for patients that were incarcerated at a mental health

* study the colors of a scarlet tanager & listen to a whippoorwill & wear a hawk feather in your hair's plumage

* be ( ) invisible & travel unincoginito as much as possible

*climb a church steeple (on the inside) ‘n’ hear god ring the bells

* vote libertarian at least once & donate to the a.c.l.u. occasionally

* never forget where you came from & who you are

* 'n' remember james joyce's olde irish line...........lovelovestolovelove..........lovers

couple old zayings about "this world then the fireworks"
or "all this & heaven too"..........

recently received a e-female korrespondence
about a lady losing a close friend
.....would like to share with the kyberspace multitudes my
responsiveresponse.....

eye seem to lose one old friend or acquaintance per year
((((at this winding down & slow paced & sedimentary time of my life))))
usually for some odd or unreasonable reason
or cos of some philosophical ranting on politics or religion..........
must come with the unturmultuous territory....
.......................their lose is my narcissistic gain

as some unholyhollywoodstarlet once zaid
--i don't care what anybody says about me........
as long as it isn't the truth

couple quotes............
a false prophet assures & reassures
a prophet disturbs.....(uttered by a jewish rabbi eye think)

evil is not the opposite of good
it is the absence of good
-tony lang

the friendship that can cease has never been real
-st. jerome

distrust the person who tells you to distrust
-ella wheeler wilcox

eye have found out that for someone to really be upset
....one who completely severs a friendship
it usually goes much deeper than what broke the kinship up
they have had some other burr under their saddle
or bee buzzing in their proverbial bonnet

there is usually some past indifference or jealousy or buried vengeance
like the another zaying........
malice swallows half of its own poison .
......so one must not carry malice

........nuthing is ever as it seems...........

often blame is easier to point out in someone else than in one self
often the last thing we don't look in the reflective mirror to see within ourselves

if there isn't any blame or fault
then it is impossible to have a disagreement or an argument
but if there is............time for a verbalbattle.........on with a physicalwar.........

{anger is one letter short of danger}
{{good is one letter extra of god}}
that's all for ztill alive zenzational zenproof me............

........a true friend will always appreciate & recognize
what pseudo-friends don't&won't&can't........

homesweethome...ioway

we is back
bev & the koyotekid
return home from a sojourn & pilgrimage & holidaze
to colorado & nude mexico
visiting with sis & bro & rest of eastoftherockies kin

great time moving my sister in colorado springs
from one hacienda to another
some stories to tell
about her driving a moving van ( no stinkin' men to help)
(she had me re-assemblin' her god blessed loom)
won't get into her not being able to get the rear door down'
her daughter riding in the back with door up & boxes bouncin'
& the ramp sliding out & bouncin' up & down on the pavement
cars & trucks going by honkin' & pointin'
........where's the fuzz when you need 'em

great trip to sante fe
touring the plaza downtown
trying to catch me all time favorite indian actor & muzikian
at his newfangled art gallery.........gary farmer
where oh where is mr. nobody
star of powwow highway & skins & coyote waits & smoke signals & the score
he made the mistake of leaving his phone # on the door
so eye called him & of course no answer
told him eye came all the way from ioway
to graze me ponies in his garden
& get his bands t-shirt autographed .......but no show

meet an artist at the sante fe indian flea market north of town
that also writes in the surrealistic vein like me
using eye for i & yet not using i for eye
likes playing with words & sentence structures & freudian lisps(slips)
like you living in your dreams
instead of your dreams living in you

yep we done did bring some (good luck) turquoise back
for the ladies of the family
to make them shine & glow & radiate their feminine charms

think some of us would like to move there
wander the surrounding terrain & ancient indian ruins
some very spiritual places there
....so zayeth the people of the town

taos was a short brief visit
but it is a very easy going & laid back area
very peaceful town & had good energy

enjoyed seeing nature
without everyone mowing their ditches & sloughs & lawns twice a week
didn't see many mow-it-alls........spray-it-alls.....know-it-alls
they let the ditches bloom in sunflowers & let the prairie dogs keep on diggin'

like the ole zaying
if you don;'t know where your going you/ll end up someplace else
good place to spend this 60th year "of earthly heaven"
in the middle of everywhere
body out west.........heart at home.........spirit in euphoric bliss

.............thanxs sweet beverlydearest for making this the best year yet...............

granddaughterbliss............

me doest think
it was w.c.fields who once quipp'd
never follow a child on the stage
cos you'll always bomb & be a flop
their unintentional humor is ten times better than scripted comedy
carissa being a young dazzling damsel at 7 weeks
me being a fossilized greyhaired antique at 60+

eye have had my dazling daze
with the sun&moon&stars
with the wind&rain&clouds
eye have crawled&jumped&flown&crashed
been a pirate/poet/klown/koyote/koward&hero
time to hand over the torch to another generation
to light up the sky

it is good when you can experience your grownup children(erica&carson)
having their children
being part of that third generation
braggin' rights of having three grandchildren..........blayke&marcus&carissa
life doesn't get any better than this
then you can feel what your grandparents felt
love'swarmth heating up a worshipping heart
a worsippingheart fogging up teary eyes

&the night was made for poets & drunks & madmen
& grandfathers who have much more to zay then they have ever zaid
grey&gregarious..............lopsided&loquacious
as eye'm with the woman of my dreams
as she sleeps with the man in her dreams
both of us never very far away
from our wideawake&sleeping thoughts

if the midnight owls don't give a hoot neither do eye
see you on the flipside
where this aging tired skinned man hides a child living inside of him
that carissa can communicate with
& can keep young till its time to go

tonite eye feel like
eye'm 59.9999999999999999999999
until the big six-o tomorrow

where did all that time go
eye'm weigh over the hill
and as eye gaze back
the hill is long-time-gone

kontempating on bob dylan's lyricallyrics
from the song "my back pages"

"in a soldiers stance, i aimed my hand
at the mongrel gods who teach
fearing not that i'd become my enemy
in the instant that i preach
my pathway led by confusion boats
mutiny fromm stern to bow
ah, but i was so much older then
i'm younger than that now"

ah we art a wee bit anti-authoritorian eye surmise
& know thy self as thy own worst enemy
far to often consciously self destructin'....
ah fellow swabbies a good sailor is a bitchin' sailor'
never trust anyone who doth knot show his or her true kolors
(people aren't against you they are just for themselves)
..like a phoenix one must rise from the smokey ashes
& like the death of the zen caterpiller metamorphize
into the metaphorical butterfly

6 minutes & eye'll be 60
too many candles to blow out
all 9 l(katnip(lives already snuffed out
long in the tooth
blind in the tri-focaled i's
but a poetikal heart that sees what most others miss
my life is most likely 3/4's over......maybe 9/10
......floating unconsciously in wakantanka's holy hand

see you all on the flipside.........a hardrainisgoingtofall
a feather for your thoughts.......byebye

firstthereisamountain-thenthereisnomoutain

been trying to find the following quotes
scribbled 'em down someplacesomewheresomehow
finally found 'em.........

"the only zen you find on top of the mountain
is the zen you bring up there"
-robert m. pinsis(hope spelling is korrect)

"if you cannot find the truth
right where you are,
where else do you expect to find it"
-dogen

often we see the universe better
with eyes closed gazing through our hearts
then with eyes open looking through our minds
when the lights go out
is the blind person the only one able to really see

a friend used to always zay
"that tomorrow isn't promised to us"
we must make the most out of today
we only have so much time to prioritize our priorities
make positive use of what we often have no control over
life is like a butterfly that lands in our open hand
and as we close it the butterfly flutters away
one day we learn to zay hello then not long after .....we must zay goodbye

oh her lips are sweet
her eyes are deep
her skin is soft

her hands heal the hidden pain
her words speak in sublime poetry
my heart belongs to only her

eye'll miss her long before eye'm gone

quotablequotes of the daze..........

many years ago
bev& eye were touring a bookstore
& eye picked up "the little book of zen"
& read the following quote
....what did the zen master zay to the hog dog vender
" make me one with everything"
eye laughed so hard my belly ached for two daze

being a poet ....one enjoys reversing things to see something in new novel way
which most people never think about doing......here goes
....what did the hot dog vender zay to the zen master
can you make me one with everything.....

would a hot dog vender already be one with everything
surely wouldn't be your normal capitalist or hooked on materialism
just maintaining a lifestyle that keeps him at balance & at peace

recently eye had the chance to use this line on a hot dog vender
asking him.... first if he knew what a zen master was......... zaid "kind of"
then eye asked him........if he would make me one with everything
he zaid o.k...........
as eye lifted my arms outstretched to the sky
& then pretending to smear mustard & onions & pickle relish on a hotdog bun

then he handed me a hot dog without everything on it.........

some guys can really screw up a two car funeral................
no sojourn to any kind of earthly utopia for me

(another variation on the zenzational zen line is)

a buddhist approuches a hot dog vendor and zays
"make me one with everything"

he gives the vendor a $20 bill and waits
finally he says "where's my change"

zays the vender : "all change must come from within"

a film that kind of plays with this concept is
"ghost dog : the way of the samurai"
except ghost dog & the hotdog vendor speak different languages yet ztill kommunicate
better than most people who speak the same language but miscommunicate

how fun & bizarre & enriching & uplifting the use of words be.....till next time

quotablequotes of the daze..........

this one is very inspiring
& makes one walk in their own worn moccasins
wondering who am i........where did i come from......where am i going
maybe why haven't i been more of a humanitarian instead of egotistical

like the ole zaying....everything we do is either a curse of a blessing
a miracle or a crime
making us either end up as criminals or miraclemakers

if you practice what you preach then you don't have to preach........a.o.k....poncho

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, "My son, the battle is between the two "wolves" inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
